Music
“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain” - Bob Marley.
Music is a vibrant part of our curriculum, inspiring creativity and confidence in every child. Through engaging lessons, singing, exploring instruments, and opportunities to perform, students develop their musical skills and appreciation. Our program nurtures teamwork, cultural awareness, and self-expression, making music a joyful and integral part of school life.
Intent
At Kates Hill, children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing and playing instruments. Children have the opportunity to evaluate, analyse, and compose across a variety of musical genres. We are committed to developing a curiosity for music, as well as an understanding of the importance of all types of music. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music. Our children will be taught music in a way that ensures a progression of skills and follows a sequence to build on previous learning. In addition to this, we intend to give each child the opportunity to learn an instrument during their time with us.
Implementation
At Kates Hill, the music curriculum is designed to be inclusive, progressive and engaging. Music is embedded in both classroom practice and wider school life. This includes weekly singing assemblies, performances and celebrations throughout the year. Using the Charanga scheme, music is taught through carefully sequenced lessons that revisit and build upon prior knowledge. This ensures children develop a secure understanding of key musical concepts over time. All children are given the opportunity to learn the recorder and violin. Children learn the core elements of music and apply these in their own compositions.
Lessons incorporate music from a variety of cultures and historical contexts, supporting diversity and a rich musical vocabulary. Through regular opportunities to create and perform music, pupils not only deepen their musical understanding but also gain confidence, creativity and enjoyment. Cross-curricular links, such as using music to reinforce learning in Maths and History, further enhance pupils' engagement and retention of knowledge.
Impact
The impact of the music curriculum at Kates Hill is evident in the way children confidently engage with music as performers, composers, and listeners. Through a progressive, inclusive and well-structured curriculum, pupils develop a secure understanding of a variety of musical elements. Regular opportunities to compose, improvise and perform in assemblies, concerts and school events help pupils build resilience, teamwork and creativity. Children develop a genuine appreciation for music from a variety of cultures, genres and time periods, and are encouraged to express themselves through music both in and beyond the classroom. Music at Kates Hill also plays a key role in supporting emotional well-being, confidence and communication. The curriculum fosters a lifelong love of music, and children leave school with the skills and enthusiasm to continue their musical journey. Impact is continually monitored through pupil voice, teacher assessment and performance opportunities, ensuring that all pupils, regardless of background or ability, are able to achieve their full musical potential.
