Physical Education

“No matter how good you get you can always get better, and that’s the exciting part.” Tiger Woods

At Kates Hill Primary School, Physical Education is an important part of our curriculum that helps children develop their physical skills, coordination, and fitness in a fun and supportive environment. Our lessons encourage teamwork, confidence, and a positive attitude towards leading a healthy lifestyle. Through a range of activities (from fundamental movement skills to team sports and creative dance) children build strength, agility, and resilience. We aim to inspire a lifelong love of physical activity so that every child leaves school with the confidence and knowledge to stay active and healthy.

Intent

At Kates Hill Primary School, we recognise the vital role that physical education plays in promoting healthy, active lifestyles and in supporting the overall well-being of our children. We aim to provide every pupil with high-quality PE provision and a wide range of sporting opportunities both in and out of school, ensuring that all children can discover the benefits and joy of physical activity.

Our PE curriculum is designed to be broad, balanced, and inclusive. We strive to inspire our pupils through exciting and stimulating lessons that are enjoyable and accessible to all. Alongside this, we place a strong emphasis on developing sport-specific skills and deepening pupils’ knowledge of different sports, enabling them to understand rules, tactics, and techniques across a variety of disciplines. We offer a variety of sports, activities, and competitions, to support children’s physical skills, confidence, and a lifelong passion for being active.

At Kates Hill, we believe sport can help children grow into respectful, honest, and determined individuals. We provide opportunities for pupils to work both independently and as part of a team, encouraging self-belief, perseverance, and a strong sense of achievement. Our pupils are taught to value fair play, teamwork, and good sportsmanship - skills that extend far beyond the sports field.

Implementation

From Early Years through to Key Stage 2, we provide a well-structured weekly PE programme that introduces children to a wide range of sports and physical activities. These sessions are designed to develop key skills, build on each child’s abilities, and help them grow in resilience and confidence. To ensure all pupils can access and succeed in PE, lessons are carefully scaffolded through differentiated tasks, targeted support, and the use of visual cues or adapted equipment when needed. This allows every child to engage meaningfully, regardless of ability or experience.

We regularly assess children’s progress in PE through teacher observations, skill tracking, and ongoing formative assessment. This helps us identify strengths, address areas for development, and ensure all pupils continue to make progress in their physical education journey.

In addition to our PE curriculum, we offer a variety of extra-curricular clubs and activities to motivate and inspire pupils. These opportunities allow children to try new sports, nurture existing interests, and enjoy physical activity in a fun and supportive environment.

Our inclusive approach to physical education ensures that every child feels valued and able to participate. We help children understand not only the importance of being physically active but also how PE supports their mental and emotional well-being. At Kates Hill, we are proud to promote a positive, active lifestyle for all our pupils.

Impact

At Kates Hill Primary, we help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through high-quality teaching that is both engaging and fun. Our PE lessons enable children to develop key physical skills such as coordination, balance, and agility, while also building confidence, teamwork, and resilience. From learning fundamental movement skills in Early Years to applying tactics in competitive games by Year 6, pupils progressively build their physical competence and understanding of healthy lifestyles. Many enjoy success in competitive sports, both within school and at inter-school events. We celebrate their sporting achievements on displays and during assemblies, as well as at local competitions. Through this, we equip our children with essential skills and a lifelong love for sport. They will leave Kates Hill Primary ready to live happy, healthy lives, applying the knowledge and abilities gained through PE.
