Personal, Social & Health Education

"The secret is to believe in your dreams; in your potential that you can be like your star, keep searching, keep believing, and don't lose faith in yourself." Neymar Jr

Intent

At Kates Hill, our mission is to equip children with the knowledge, understanding, and emotional resilience necessary to thrive as active, positive, and successful members of today's diverse society. We aspire for our students to develop high aspirations, self-belief, and the determination to realise their full potential. Recognising the importance of preparing children for an ever-evolving world, we focus on providing them with the skills to manage their emotions and mental health effectively.

Our Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) curriculum is designed to nurture the 'whole child'. It supports their personal and social development while promoting their social, mental, and physical well-being. Through this curriculum, children are encouraged to engage with moral, social, and cultural issues, empowering them to navigate the complexities of growing up with confidence and understanding.

Implementation

Students learn PSHE through ‘Jigsaw,’ a spiral and progressive curriculum that covers all the mentioned topics. It aims to equip children for life by helping them appreciate their identity and understand their relationships with others in a constantly changing world. The programme places a strong focus on emotional literacy, developing resilience, and supporting both mental and physical health. It also incorporates mindfulness to help children improve their emotional awareness, concentration, and focus.

Jigsaw follows six half termly themes with each year group studying the same unit at the same time (at their own level):

Autumn 1: Being Me in My World

Autumn 2: Differences (including anti-bullying)

Spring 1: Dreams and Goals

Spring 2: Healthy Me

Summer 1: Relationships

Summer 2: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

It also highlights connections to British Values and SMSC, and is delivered in a way that reflects the school’s overall aims, values, and ethos. We believe that encouraging a ‘Growth Mindset’ in our children helps them develop resilience, independence, and confidence; embrace challenges; and nurture a love of learning. This approach supports both our school’s and PSHE’s aims and values, and we promote Growth Mindset throughout all areas of school life.

Impact

Our spiral PSHE curriculum and broader support ensure that children are prepared to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health, and relationships. Our whole-school vision, focused on nurturing children’s spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development, helps them build positive relationships and deepen their understanding of British Values in an age-appropriate way. Ultimately, we aim to develop responsible citizens who can thrive in an ever-changing community.
